About Lena Potts

I am a passionate educator, writer, and equity advocate. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by peers and adults from varying cultures and backgrounds. My life was filled with language, food, and tradition from different parts of the world. During college, I was exposed to class and privilege for what felt like the first time, and struggled to find my place in a privileged institution that I felt lucky to be a part of. Studying Cultural and Social Anthropology helped me to reconcile those experiences- the culturally diverse but economically static circumstances of urban poverty, with the privilege and possibility of liberal, progressive wealth. Now, as a K-12 educator, I work in service of low-income communities and communities of color.

What I Do:

K-12 Education

With 15 years in education, I've spent the bulk of my career in extended-learning and out-of-school, community-based education. I've worked TK-College, always in low-income communities and communities of color, and this is the context I bring into my other work.

Writing

Many of my essays on race, (pop) culture, feminism, politics, and how to make sense of it all can be found online. Working on a book :)

From school districts to private companies, I'm passionate about making organizations more inclusive spaces for all stakeholders. When everyone is truly valued, anything can happen.

Social Media

This primarily came about on accident, but for those curious for my takes but uninterested in reading them, I say them with markedly less grace and nuance on TikTok.
